My daughter hopes to enter the Sakura University. However, her capacity is very poor, so I have no choice but to compel her take the exam of another university. Although it's not her hope, there is no way.
*Be very careful as to when you replace one of these phrases with another.
V + しかない : used in a situation where one has no choice but to do something.
Vneg + ざるを得ない : used in a situation where one has no choice but to do something.
Vneg + なければならない : used in a situation where one has to do something because s/he has an obligation to do it OR where one has no choice but to do something.
Vneg + わけに(は)いかない : used in a situation where one has to do something because s/he has an obligation to do it OR where one has no choice but to do something. It also expresses the unwillingness of the speaker to do V.

V(dictionary form) + しかない N + しかない

the first example #336 might also be used as [hokanai] suru yori hokanai
dc
やるっきゃない is another folksy way of saing #336.
bamboo4
I believe that in example #1219, you can simply use 「...アルバイトしかない」 without the verb. Probably both ways are acceptable.
rubyhatchet
#1219 か is missing. 卒業できなかったから ... I think both wasy are acceptable.
Miki
is Vneg plus しかない possible e.g. あしたまでにこの仕事をしなければいけないので、寝ないしかない
sagittarius
Probably not possible. So your example sounds strange. eg. 明日までにこの仕事をしなければならないので、寝るわけにはいかない。or 起きているしかない。
Miki
ex #3681 does not use the grammar pattern.
マリ
I fixed ex #1219 according to the alert of Mikiさん. I need some help for the translation of #6892.
赤毛
#6890: there's difference between the two sentences, the Japanese and the English
amenya
I fixed the translation of #6892. Is it ok?
amenya
Amenyaさん, Thanks for your help. I think it's OK now and I changed the status of #6892 to neutral. For #6890, I picked it in http://www.japonin.com/intermediate-grammar-list.php . I think the translation is not literal but is OK. I added #7039 intending to give a more literal translation. マリさん, In #3681, the pattern seems to be N+しかない instead of V(dictionary form)+しかない.
赤毛
I've changed #7039 translation, is it ok?
karekano
I think 〜ざるを得ない expresses more the unwillingness of the speaker than 〜わけにはいかない. So maybe it`s better to add that expressed feeling too.
